Studies on Adsorption of Phages and Lysogeny of Staphylococci

Abstract
In spite of the recent advancement of knowledge on phages, there are still many problems to be cleared on phage-host relationships. For example, the delayed adsorption of phage 52A on phage-propagating strain (PS) 52A/79, and the relationship between phage adsorption and sensitivity to phages should be studied to give a clear-elucidation. This report is concerned on the delayed adsorption of phage 52A on PS 52A/79 and the adsorption-of group III phages and lysogeny of group II strains. The results are as follows:
1. The delayed adsorption of phage 52A was not improved by various methods of test in different media, and the cause was considered duo to the mutual characteristics of phage and PS.
2. Treatment of phage and PS- with human erythrocytes did not improve the adsorption rate.
3. Treatment of PS with trypaflavine or heat also did not accelerate the speed, of adsorption.
4. The adsorption of phage 52A on PS 80 was more rapid than that on PS 52A/79 and the rate of adsorption measured by the conventional method was much higher on PS 80 than PS 62A/79.
5. Group II phages 3A, 3C, 55 and 71 were adsorbed rapidly and at high rates on PS and isolated group II strains. There was no difference on the adsorption of phages between their own and other PS of group II.
6. There was no difference between phage adsorption and plaque formation.
7. PS of group II other than PS 3A liberated temperate pillages which were active on one or two of other PS belonging same group.
